What Is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment for submental fat, what we commonly refer to as a double chin. It is an injectable prescription medicine that has been approved to reduce or eliminate fat beneath the chin.

How Does Kybella Work?

The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring bodily substance that promotes the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the chin, the fat cells die and cannot return.

Are There Side Effects?

The most common side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, redness, and numbness in the treated area.

How Many Kybella Treatments Do I Need, and How Often?

Your specific treatment protocol depends upon your anatomy and the aesthetic goals you wish to achieve. Drs. Grossman, Capraro, and Baker will design a customized treatment plan for you, but most patients require two to four treatments to reduce the appearance of their double chins. In certain cases, though, we may recommend as many as six treatments. The injections are administered a month or more apart.

Do I Have to Keep Receiving Kybella Injections to Maintain My Progress?

No, this is one of the most exciting aspects of this treatment. Because the fat cells are destroyed, they cannot return. Once the desired appearance has been achieved, no additional treatments are needed.

Am I a Good Candidate for Kybella?

Only your cosmetic surgeon can determine whether or not you and Kybella are a good match, but typical patients:

  • Are in overall good health.
  • Have good skin elasticity.
  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Wish to reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Kybella promises to revolutionize the way we think about treatment for double chins. Although cosmetic surgery remains an effective, relevant option, minimally invasive and noninvasive treatments are always preferred when available.
