Board Certified Plastic Surgeons Serving Denver, Aurora, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, and Nearby Colorado

When it comes to balancing the facial anatomy, ears play a pivotal role. Having ears pinned back naturally provides a smooth silhouette to a person’s head shape. For those born with their ears congenitally protruding outward, it’s easy to feel eager to want an Otoplasty.

You may feel self-conscious if your ears stick out at a wide angle from your head. Otoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure that adjusts the protrusion of the ears so that they are flatter against the side of your head. To arrange a consultation with our experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons in Denver or Greenwood Village, please call Grossman | Capraro Plastic Surgery at 303-320-5566.

Otoplasty Surgery in Denver

"Otoplasty," also called ear surgery, can address a few aspects of your ears:

  • Position
  • Size
  • Proportion

Protruding ears that stick out obtrusively from the head are the most common reason people seek otoplasty. Because of this outcome, you may have heard this procedure referred to as ear pinning. While the ears are not actually pinned back, our plastic surgeons will adjust the position of the ears so that they do not stick out. Afterward, your ears will look more natural and will not distract from your appearance.

Children and ear surgery: Although many adults pursue this procedure, it is also commonly elected by children and their parents. In fact, many otoplasty patients are between the ages of 4 and 14. Children with protruding ears are often the victims of damaging, even traumatic, bullying by their peers.

As the parent making this decision on behalf of your child, you shoulder the responsibility for deciding whether otoplasty is the right choice. The results are lifelong. Meet with our compassionate, experienced plastic surgeons to discuss this option. Otoplasty for a child who is self-conscious about their ears can be positively life-changing. The procedure is effective and has a long-standing safety record. Your child will be able to enjoy their results their entire life, as the procedure permanently corrects protrusion and improves position.

The Procedure

Depending on the patient's age and preferences, ear surgery may be performed with:

  • Local anesthesia combined with a sedative
  • General anesthesia

Children receive general anesthesia so that the procedure can be performed easily and efficiently. If you are an adult, you may instead opt for local anesthetics, which involve a much faster recovery.

The plastic surgeon makes an incision in the fold behind your ear, where it will be well-hidden and unapparent to other people. Through this incision, the surgeon may remove and/or reshape the ear cartilage. If protruding ears are being corrected, then absorbable sutures are used to stitch the cartilage closer to the head. As the weeks pass after surgery, the sutures deteriorate and your skin, cartilage and tissue will naturally grow into their new position.

Otoplasty Recovery and Results

School-aged children will need to stay home for about a week after surgery. Adults can typically return to work after several days. Even if you're an adult, you'll need to have someone care for you and help you out for about 24 hours after surgery.

You will notice an immediate difference in the appearance of your ears, which will continue to improve. Your results should be finalized after about two weeks, although subtle decreases in swelling and shape may continue for a few months.
